Renewing Expedition

We have brought back the Expedition program for middle schoolers for 2024. Sound View’s unique sandy-beach waterfront and access to some interesting day trips on Anderson Island allows for campers to gain significant canoeing experience.

Expedition campers usually visit Andy’s Marine Park and Eagle island.

Two expedition leaders shape the camp session. Their goal is to get campers, regardless of their past experience, comfortable in canoes and able to safely join in flatwater trips. They also have the ability to allow the expedition campers to further tweak the program, including planning, overnight tent camping on the waterfront, cooking some of their own meals, and late-night activities.

Expedition campers learn…

  • Canoeing and canoe safety

  • Simple navigation working with chart and compass

  • Canoe over canoe rescue

  • Outdoor cooking

  • Trip planning

  • Leave-no-trace campcraft

The AmeriCorps NCCC team will be repairing and painting a vintage fleet of sleek canoes this winter to be used only by Expedition. Working together to care for watercraft is also part of the Expedition experience because “a canoe takes two”.
